Small business and residential traffic management service

Carrying out external works?

We help small businesses, sole traders and homeowners who need traffic or pedestrian management as part of the work they are carrying out on a home or business. This could be anything from tree surgery to minor works like external repairs or re-decoration. Many of our clients didn’t realise they needed a traffic management service for their small works or building work and when they found out, unsurprisingly, didn’t know where to start.

Capital Traffic will manage the whole process on your behalf- talking to the local authority, securing any permissions, and managing any disruption to traffic or pedestrians. All we need is a date and a location and we will manage the whole process for you.

Common Questions

When will I need a permit for traffic management?

Many different types of work may require traffic management to be put in place. Anything that will affect the movement of vehicles or people on a carriageway, footway or footpath may require traffic management to be put in place. Examples are scaffolding that comes out onto the footway, deliveries of materials using hiabs or large vehicles that may take more than half an hour or tree surgery close to the carriageway or footway. If in doubt you can check with your local authority, or give us a call and we will be happy to advise you with no charge.

How do I organise traffic management?

The only way to arrange traffic management is through a provider who has the correct qualification for the particular type of job. You will also need to secure the correct permits for your job from the Highways Department in your local authority before work begins. It is possible to do this yourself, but we can manage this process on your behalf for £65.

What permits do I need?

If traffic management is required for the work that you plan to undertake, then there will also be a requirement to gain permission from the local highway authority to place the equipment on the network. There are many types of permits and permissions that may be required, dependent upon the type of work being undertaken. We are happy to give you some informal advice at an early stage about the different types of permissions you will need so you can judge whether this is something you can handle yourself or would prefer some help with the process. We do not charge for any advice we provide or site meetings before work begins. We have long standing relationships with many local highway authorities, so you can be sure you will have the right permissions in place to undertake your work.

How much will this cost?

Costs can vary enormously, dependent upon which type of traffic management and associated restrictions and permissions that are required. Local highway authority charges can also vary significantly from one authority to another. At an early stage in the planning of your job, we will establish the local authority costs and estimate our works costs, so you will have a clear idea of costs before committing fully to our services.

Who do I need to speak to in the local authority?

Getting hold of the right person at a local authority can be very time consuming. Complex council and contractor arrangements can make it difficult just to know who in which organisation you need to contact. If you are not sure who you need to contact or find yourself in difficulty trying to get hold of the right person, just give us a call and we will happily advise you free of charge.

How long will it take to organise?

Again, this is very dependent on where the works are located, how complex they are and how long they will take to complete. Emergency jobs can be organised in a matter of hours, with works requiring road closures or other temporary restrictions taking up to 12 weeks. Typically, a job that doesn’t require any special restrictions can be organised in one to two weeks.
